Adding a tachometer to a V7 III Stone.

For those who have been asking to add a tachometer to your single gauge speedo V7 Mk III. Special thanks to our friend Bill C for the info below. He successfully did the install.

Here's a parts list to add a OEM Moto Guzzi tachometer. I ran the tachometer wires (5) through the speedometer sleeve and soldered the splice back into the main harness.

Just added a tach to my V7 III stone. Got it on Ebay from a seller called motormeterracing. Price is not the cheapest at US$90 delivered. It is a made in Taiwan, and appears to be much better built than the $20 Chinese ones I have purchased for other bikes. It is made for single cylinder 4 strokes (8.3 Hz); just painted the body black and made a simple aluminium bracket. Have only had it on for a week, so can't confirm reliability, but it works great (the needle is perfectly smooth) and except for the size, it looks like it belongs on the guzzi.

It is not plug and play. I had to splice onto the red/orange wire of the coil connector for the signal. The ground I connected to a coil mounting bolt and the positive power I spliced to another connector (in the steering head).

I am contemplating on upgrading to the new v7iii Stone...but can't get over the no tach :D
 
I missed the tach also, but at the time it was more important to have mag wheels and tubeless tires. The $1000 less price tag for the Stone also helped.

is there any way to change the backlight of the OEM speedo?
Needle/dial is a nice red but if i can change it to a white that would be nice.
Also has anyone been able to black out the bezel?

I haven't dug into one that far yet, you'll be the first... as it would involve taking it apart to see what the light source is. Old school would be change the bulb, but I think those days are long gone. Bezel would best be painted in place. Removal typically means destroying it as they try to make them tamperproof and water-tight.

Off topic but try adjusting valves on a ducati 4 valver, that'll make you appreciate any bike you got.
It'd be nice to be able to change out the oem speedo for a more sleeker one. From what I've read and seen that it is a PITA and no easy swap.
 
Last year it was claimed an add-on tachometer required the ignition signal. I said the CANbus signal could also be used with Speedhut tachometers; speedhut.com/gauges/Tachometers/Freedom-CAN-Bus-(OBDII)-Gauges/?catid=f232|f9|f215

People disagreed so I offered to specify a tachometer configuration (make sure you don't get one with the bezel button because they leak); I would buy the tachometer; create a plug-in wiring harness (I already have the connector); and demonstrate it works on my 2019 V7 III Stone. If it works, they will buy assembly from me for 20% more than I paid for the tachometer. If it doesn't work, I eat crow plus the cost of the tachometer. Nobody took my offer.

If you want to, better hurry because I'm getting ready to trade-in my V7 on a Can-Am Spyder F3. Or if you are in San Diego County I can demonstrate it on your motorcycle.

NO wires will be cut. This is wiring harness plug-in to the BlueDash/MGMP connector.

That's tempting, saves me from cutting into the oem harness which I will gladly avoid at any cost.
 
Garth Weston, looks great. May I ask about the rpm signal? There is an indication in the other thread that the coil signal on MG is half the frequency that would be normal. Did you encounter this issue?
