I have sprayed those horrible cheap and nasty 'chrome' plastic bits on the side of the tank and it's completely transformed the look of the bike (in my eyes). Obviously I had to take the tank off to do this, which was very easy thanks to instructions on this site. i sprayed them satin black so they blend in with my black bike. I also did the rear grab rail, not just because I didn't like the dull grey, but also because it was badly scratched. That really has transformed the back end of the bike. I'm very pleased with the results.

How did you prep the plastic and what did you spray it with? Any pics?

I quite like the shiny bits on the tank but he grab rail is getting a bit tatty looking.

I saw a pic of a 1200 Sport with these trim in gloss black with MOTO GUZZI printed in white. Looked nice, I do it my self but there always seems to be something else with a higher priority on the ToDo list. I'm interested in knowing what you used too.

The grab rail of my B12S got scuffed during shipping and I had it stripped and powder coated in flat black by a local coating shop. Only cost around $60 and looks great. The same shop also put a black ceramic coating on my header pipes because I am not a fan of discoloured chrome or stainless steel pipes.

Regarding the tank side panels I am planning on getting those wrapped in flat black car wrap. Had a quote from a local shop of around $100 for the pair. The advantage over painting is that there's no need to take the tank off and the wrap can easily be removed.

I sanded using wet and dry and then used ordinary rattle cans to paint several coats. I probably should have used a couple of coats of lacquer but time will tell! I will take some pics tomorrow.

For $6 at Lowes or Home Despot, you can get a spray can of Plast-Dip. Super easy to apply (mask, or don't) and if you don't like the look, peel it off with no damage underneath.

Look at dipyourcar.com for application info. It's also durable - I sprayed my car grill 8 months ago and wheels 2 months ago and use an automatic brush car wash - no peeling or damage at all.

I tried the Plast-Dip and liked the look BUT I found that Plasti-Dip does not work with masking tape. I sprayed the side panels on the bike, i.e. without taking off the tank and removing the panels, and carefully masked them off.

Spraying was a breeze and everything looked great but when it came to pulling off the masking tape, the tape pulled off the Plasti-Dip on the panels too! I even tried to cut around the edges with a sharp knife prior to removing the tape but no luck either. In the end I pulled everything off again completely.

So if you use Plasi-Dip I recommend you remove the panels for spraying. Mind you, you might as well use proper paint in that case because Plasti-Dip does not stand up well to gas spills!

hhkiwi, there's really no need to use masking tape as both the grab rail and the tank are very easy to remove!

Thanks Paul, I might give it a go. I'm sort of dreading to remove the fuel connector based on what I've read but I'll have to give it a shot sooner or later...

Hi hhkiwi, Like you I was very concerned about removing the tank, but there's info on this site about removing the fuel connector and it really is very easy, it took me seconds to do! Give it a go.
