See, I can't hear 5th gear at speed over the wind noise despite my tall fairing, but all the gears make that same straight cut gear teeth noise that Japanese bikes (especially my old Kawasaki) make normally. It certainly hasn't altered since I bought the bike (I've put on about 2000km so far) despite putting high quality synthetic gear oil in it. Some noise is actually pretty common from what I've heard, and there are stories of mechanics taking apart gearboxes because of noise, finding nothing wrong and putting them back together again.
But every now and then some one gets it REALLY bad (like you) and there really are some pretty bad teeth in there. I find it pretty scary that after only 30,000 km you are finding that extent of wear. Either you've got a bad batch of gears or the available lubricants in South Africa aren't up to the job.
Please keep us posted on how the rebuild goes. I know Teo Lamers in the Netherlands has most of the gears in stock (I checked in case I need to do the same.) They seem to range from 80 Euro to 120 Euro. Not sure what that would be in Rand, but you wouldn't be paying the VAT.
