That was a common mod back then. If non synthetic oil was used, the rear drive had a tendency to build pressure and cause problems (leaks) even though the pinion shaft isn't sealed. Go ahead and get a new fill plug and use synthetic oil and you should be fine. Also I don't recommend using moly in the rear drive. I've seen it damage the needle bearing in the rear drive. It is good for the gears, but not so good for the bearings.
