I have a noticeable hesitation at around 5500 RPM (on the road). If accelerating through this range everything is fine but if holding at this range there seems to be some fuel-starvation.

I am about to dig deeper, go back to the basics of valve clearances and throttle-cable slack etc. but I read somewhere that there was an updated map that addressed this problem.

This evening I connected Guzzidiag for the first-time just to make sure it communicated okay with the bike, which it does but how do I know what map is installed and where do I find the latest maps?

My ECU is reported back from Guzzidiag as:

IAW 5AM PF1C
2229BRV1249
IAW5AMHW610

WLoad1039T
2005.07.22

Can someone give a clue as to how to decode this?

The first line looks like the ECU model and the last line looks like the date.

The latest maps are:
2230BB10 for the ABS model and
2230BA10 for non ABS.
I'm not sure changing the map will solve your problem best get the basics right first.

Dave highlighted it above, however:

ECU Type: IAW 5AM PF1C
Firmware: IAW5AMHW610
Map: 2229BRV1249
Info/date: WLoad1039T - 2005.07.22

Maps have been very proprietary until very recently. I don't offer Diag support here on this site, since I have spent a great deal of money and time on map development via my GT-Rx® Performance Re-flash service. Factory maps are only available at your local dealer via their newest software "PADS" -- Guzzi does not freely share maps.

Hope that helps,
Todd
