Hello all,
I haven't posted on here in about a month. I want to share my story.
A few weeks ago on Feb 29th, I took my bike down the coast and met up with a friend in Carlsbad, CA. We rode down along the shoreline through La Jolla and it was a beautiful day. Then headed inland, and he showed me a bunch of great twisty roads. We road down to the border crossing near Tecate (didn't cross over), back up in the hills, through Alpine, Mt. Laguna, Julian, down a creepy rode in the middle of nowhere that is lined with dolls and doll parts - looks like something out of a horror movie, and more.
It really was a beautiful day. Saw a lot of wildlife including a magnificent bald eagle, and tons of nature out in the middle of inland San Diego County.
Just outside of Santa Ysabel, we were on a road I had not been on before. There was a decreasing radius turn that was about a 150 degree almost hairpin. I must have gone in a little too fast (about 25 MPH), and ended up going wide in the turn. As I went wide, I hit some gravel and went down on the side of the road. I was wearing riding jeans and an armored hoodie, and of coarse a helmet and gloves.
I stood up right away, and was relieved that I was mostly ok. When I moved my left arm (went down on my left side), it would not move and was sore. My buddy circled back and checked on me. Helped me get my helmet off, and my hoodie off. No skin rash. Got the helmet off, neck was fine, 1 little scratch on the visor, rest of the helmet was ok, so I don't think I hit my head. But still couldn't move my upper left arm. Lower arm below the elbow was ok, and I could move my fingers.
My friend picked up my bike, and miraculously there was no damage to the bike, as it went down in the soft grass. The only thing we could find was a small scratch on the cylinder head.
At this point, I knew I couldn't ride back home, so I called for a tow. Took the tow truck 2 hours to get there, then another 2 hours home to Anaheim. Arm was still sore/in pain, but everything else was ok. AAA motorcycle coverage covers 100 miles of towing. It was 99 miles to my house so I just lucked out there.
After I got the bike back in the garage, I drove myself to my local hospital. I explained that I had either a dislocated or broken shoulder. When I told them I had been in a motorcycle accident, they said they could not treat me, and ordered me to be transferred to a Trauma center. I explained that it was just my arm, but they claimed state law, and wanted to make sure I had no internal injuries.
I was put in an ambulance and sent to the fine folks at UCI Medical center in Orange. They were concerned as my blood pressure was quite high. They ordered X-rays (mostly determined it was a dislocated shoulder), and CAT scan. Funny thing when they tried to put me in CAT scan, they asked me to move my arm closer to my body, but I explained that I could not move it. So they waited until someone came in to reset my dislocated shoulder. Eventually CAT scan was done.
The good news is it was just a dislocated shoulder, and I had no other internal injuries. So wear all your gear, all the time.....
My arm is still sore, but I was back to work Monday with no time lost. After 2 -1/2 weeks of waiting, my insurance just approved an MRI for my shoulder. I should know the results by the end of next week.
I am unsure if I will ride again once my shoulder has recovered. I will make that decision at that time. I really did enjoy riding, and hopefully I will again someday.
Just wanted to share my story. Stay safe (and away from the Corona virus) and ride shiny side up.
