Gearbox oil change

2008 Breva 750: Can the gearbox drainbolt be removed without first removing the exhaust crossover pipe?
 
Yes it can with some finger dexterity and patience. Same goes for putting the bolt back in.

However there is a solution

You may - or may not - also be able to pivot the big tin can a bit for better access. I wasn't, as the crossover was stuck....

With a little help from my friends shown above, and some heat too, it eventually went off. :mrgreen:
 
This Joe can get the plug off with the stock crossover. It was helped by loosening the crossover on both sides and rotating to give more room.

The plug goes in by getting the right approach angle, and with some nimble fingers.

I just read on MG_750 that synthetic gear oil is bad for the plastic bearing cages. I have used AMSOIL synthetic products for 27 years in everything I own without one problem. I had planned to change the gearbox over to their 75W90 Severe Gear Lube and the rear final drive to 75W140 Severe Gear Lube. These lubes contain friction modifiers and do not require moly or any other additives. I did change the engine oil and filter out and refilled with AMSOIL 20W50 Motorcycle Oil. The engine runs much quieter than it did on whatever was in there before (used bike with 2K miles), and oddly enough, throttle response is noticeably better.

I would appreciate any thoughts on these lubricants.
 
Plastic cages have been done away with, your Breva doesn't have then, A lot of folks are using Red Line Shock Proof heavy duty Synthetic in both the Gearbox and final drive, I use it exclusively in all my Guzzis.

Another vote here for Amsoil synthetic 20/50 motorcycle oil. Works fine in my Hinckley Bonneville as well as the V7 Classic. I too noticed the Guzzi engine seemed smoother/quieter after I changed whatever the dealer put in at 1st service to Amsoil 20/50.

Comes to my mind that the Bonnevilles carry oil coolers. The SB Guzzis doesn't. Which makes sense to use the best of the recommended oil grades. ;)
 
My wote goes to RedLine Shock Proof - stocking up on this stuff for both final drive and transmission.
