Guzzi NewB looking @ ‘08 Norge

Solved the weepy valve cover gasket issue this weekend. Turned out, about half the screws were loose. I used a t-handle so I couldn’t get too much torque on the fasteners.

1st one turned more than a half turn with little effort. The rest were varying degrees of that and two of the upper ones didn’t turn at all with the same amount of force applied.

After idling for a while and the ride home, no further oil appeared and what was already damp burned off and is now dry. Engine clean up to follow once the rain stops for a bit.

The “to-do” list keeps growing longer the deeper I get into things. I’m sure some reading this will chuckle a bit as they can relate.

Front tire install aside, I’ll maybe swap the 900SS rotors on while the wheel is out. They’re a little ugly but the rotor bands are true.

Buttons not seized either, but given the bath of suspension fluid they were bathed in when removed, that’s not a surprise.

Yes, they’ve been steam cleaned and then blasted with brake cleaner before being stored.

If, and that’s a capital IF that solves the front brake issues the starter circuit is next on the immediate list.

The wire mod to the OEM relay has been done. Not the MPH “startus interruptus” plug & play, but a fused yellow wire to the battery positive terminal. Was already there when I got the bike.

Next step for me is to check the starter itself and the relay internal contacts and see what can be done there. Clean out clutch dust and possibly lube the armature bearings, clean contacts etc…

After that, stepper motor clean up so the bike will idle correctly. Then clean & lube both the center stand & side stand pivots. Neither will fully retract without assistance.

That should keep my plate full for the holiday weekend….and maybe the next one too.

Small update:

Got the front wheel out to swap out the tire. Took the opportunity to fully get into the floating rotor buttons.

What I discovered is that the right side, where the ABS ring is not problematic. It’s free and moves easily like it should. Cleaned it further with brake cleaner while spinning the floater buttons with an easy out.

Once dry, I sprayed in some aviation grade lube that leaves a dry film while spinning the buttons similar to when cleaning them. Each now spins with my fingers. The left side is still very tight but all the buttons turn easily, having gotten the same treatment.

Also cleaned the pistons by extending them out and brushing them with a nylon brush and spraying in brake cleaner. Once clean I pushed them all the way back in, and installed the wheel. Gave the front end a bounce and torqued all the fasteners to spec.

Gave the brake lever several pumps to get a good form lever feel and took a quick test ride. Front end judder is gone, though I can still feel a slight pulsation from the uneven wear on the left rotor. Really minimal so I’ll just run it for a while and see if the wear evens out.

Chased down all the terminals involved in the start circuit and cleaned all of them. Once cleaned off, I applied some Corrosion X to all of them.

Based on some of the reading I’ve done around the forum, I ordered a new hi capacity LiFePO battery. It is a Group 20 like the original but claimed to have a great deal more cranking amperage.

I’ve already pulled the starter to check and make sure the Bendix is clean and it was. Found it to be a Bosch starter so should be able to find rebuild parts/kits if needed. Can’t diagnose further without a known good condition battery.

Should be here by Friday. Considered buying locally but all I could find were AGMs of unknown quality. It wasn’t like they were priced any different than ordering the lithium battery though.

All for now….further updates to follow…possibly in a new thread. Hopefully I’ll just be riding and enjoying the bike once the new battery is installed.

I hope you purchased your battery from the Store to help support this site.

I did not, for 2 reasons.

#1 being “NOT STOCKED - BROUGHT IN ON PAID ORDER ONLY. Allow 7-10 business days to have in hand”

#2 being I did not see “group 20 battery replacement” in the descriptions of any of the batteries in the store. I did look there 1st before looking for a battery described as a group 20 replacement elsewhere.

I’ll not state where or what brand. Only that they claim they’ll have it here to my door in 5 days. I could have added another $50 for their claimed 3 day delivery.

This was more of a case of multiple factors steering me in a particular direction rather than a single one influencing my choice. Delivery time was just one….
