Hi, New to your group, looking for help. I have a 97 1100i I bought used with 75,000 mi. It ran a little ruff, and vibrates a lot mostly in 5th gear, changed all the fluids, checked compression, heads leaking so I did a valve job. engine runs better now compression up but still vibrates the same, really bad when I shift into 5th gear. I'm Thinking it may be the drive shaft u-joints or something behind the engine. Why mainly in the top gear and not the others? Anyone had this problem? Would applicate your advice, a whole lot of shaken going on.

THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED ME MAIN PROBLEM WAS THE OUTER HUB FLANGE, R & R ,,OK NOW

Since you are new to Guzzis at what speed in 5th gear ? If you are below 3500 rpms, then that probably is the problem.

Thanks for asking, Speed above 60, RPM's over 3000. Someone suggested bad rear wheel bearings, he had the same problem on a 2001. I checked it out on the center stand & there is some play when I shake the tire. Ordered new bearings. Makes sense, under load going through the gears it's fine, when I slow down the rear brake is on, but speeding up If I shift into 5th the RPM's drop and the rear brake is off allowing the wheel to wobble. easy fix if that solves the problem.

I would check the universal joint, the motor mounts and any other nuts and bolts that could loosen up over time. front and rear wheel bearings are most important and a commonly overlooked item.

You may find your bearing are fine, but are spinning in the hub. I would check them immediately before they get too loose for the Loctite solution.

Thank you, The rear outer hub flange was worn, had it welded and re-bored replaced the bearings and seals, new tire and balance.
pulled swing arm, u-joints ok but replaced carrier bearing and re-packed swing arm bearings & new seals. The main vibration is gone.

I need to check out the FI system next , motor is running rich and not very smooth. bought a Twinmax for the job, now if I can figure out how to do it. another first for me...............Jim

Jim,

The 97s are also touchy to TPS voltage. MPH has excellent information so that you can check and adjust the TPS with a digital volt meter. See http://www.mphcycles.com/Technical/Tech..html A great deal of useful information has been provided by this dealer.

BTW, if you do need to adjust the TPS, the screws are torx, T-20.

Another first? From the way you're reporting, it sounds like you've been doing jobs like this all your life!
