A strange one for me.

I start the bike, runs fine at idle. warms up and purrs.
I pull the clutch in, down shift to first - clutch still in - engine dies.

Only thing I've done was give it a bath today.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Chris

Chris, that would likely be the side stand switch or transmission switch not showing the the bike is in neutral. It's a safety thing. Washing the bike likely got water into either (or possibly both) and shorted the switch. Check for water, dry out if so, and try again or after the water evaporates, it will be normal again.
Check and report back.

Really?
I'll have to figure out where those switches are now!
Thanks so much!
Chris

SIdestand switch is fitted over the sidestand pivot and attaches by one small bolt. Gearbox neutral switch is on top of the gearbox near the back where the shaft comes out. That one's a pain to get to. If your neutral light comes on correctly, it's not that one.

Guzzi sidestand switches are well known for being troublesome. Some people bridge them out. Fine for those who are perfectly organised and never forget anything. Since I'm the kind of person who often goes to the fridge, opens the door and forgets why he's there, :? I prefer to fix it if it plays up. I like my skin where it is.

Thanks rossw!
Yep. Neutral light comes on just fine.
I guess I shouldn't have been nice to it and given her a bath!

My bikes like being bathed once a year.

What kind of cleaner did you use? Water by itself shouldn't short the switch. Clean the switch with electrical contact cleaner that should eliminate the water and then lube with a electrical contact lube.

This is the first sidestand switch problem I've seen on the forum. I've never had one, never heard of one either. I better go an lube it before it decides to spite me.
