oil leak

My husband and I are getting ready to head out to the bike fest in seaside. I'm sitting on my idling Nevada waiting for hub to finish loading up and keep smelling oil. We had just changed to synthetic oil a few weeks ago and I knew it couildn't be spillage. So I look down at the right cylinder head next to the spark plug and oil is bubbling up and out on to the head cover. I also noticed that the soft plug that hides the hex bolt was missing. I shut it down and we called a Guzzi shop here in Oregon to see what was up. They told us it was some sort of tube in the cylinder that oil was coming up through it wouldn't lose much but to keep a close eye on the oil level. It sounds like they will have to tare into the engine to fix the problem. Then when we get home we're unloading the bikes from the trailor and the bracket that the passenger pegs attach to breaks off.

Did I make a mistake in buying A Guzzi? Are they built cheap? The bike is a 2008 and only has 3200k on the odometer. We also had to have the shifter replaced because the metal tore and the shifter fell off.

I like the bike a lot and am considering some up grades like staintune exhaust and a power commander but I don't want to invest in a lemon. Anyone had similar problems or incidents like this?

Did you install new valve cover gaskets when you did the service? If so, they may have compressed after a few heat cycles and should be snugged down. I don't know of any "tube" in the engine for the oil supply. The plug in the hex is just a rubber plug, they are known to leave occasionally. As for the passenger peg mount, did you hit it while loading or unloading? They are a little more fragile than in the "old days" but strong enough to hold weight, but not to take side force.

No, IMO they are not built cheap, but Luigi is not known to have the same quality control management as, say the japanese and problems can need to get sorted with new guzzis... but the small block engine is a very solid tried and true motor and once sorted will go on and on..

the leak is a warranty issue, the bracket I don't know how that happened...

Getting the staintunes is a good idea - they are more expensive than some cans but look great and will improve the HP and sound B)

Oil leak?

It may be the rocker gasket, the cover may not be tight enough or it may just be the breather hose isn't sealing or the rubber hose has split. If you have crimped, bent or occluded the breather vent then the bike will leak oil as crank pressure will build. Make sure you haven't squashed a hose.

All really minor stuff probably caused by the last person who tampered with it. Nothing to do with build quality.

Small blocks, like any machine have areas that are weaker than others but this just sounds like an easy fix. The only other thing it may be is the head torquing. Only 5 bolts hold the heads on a small block but 6 on a biggie. Care needs to be used when putting them on.

Thanks all for your responses. I want to believe that this is a quality bike and will please me for years to come. Just wierd stuff seems to happen to it like my gas cap getting stuck, We did eventually get it off but had to order another one from Guzzi. Small stuff I know. My Hub bought a new Yamaha FZ6 and has never had a problem with it. I guess it's a Italian thing and quirks will happen. Just hope they stop soon! :)

Cheers and ride safe!
