Powdercoat or anodized

I'm having some aluminum parts refinished in a matte black to match my v7 stone.

Any recommendations or personal experience with powdercoating vs anodizing for the job. Any insight is appreciated, thanks.

Perhaps this topic should be moved to a different section. I just thought about that.

P-C is most durable, but be sure to use a good shop that is well versed in moto parts, as the cheaper large scale operations will coat important surfaces and bolt holes, causing you hours of work. Anodizing is of course excellent too, and hard anodizing is best for long exposure and durability. Cheaper coatings will fade and age.
There are of course arguments against both, but even the factory uses both as solutions against corrosion and color options.

My options to move posts is lacking at the moment, so here is fine for now.

Now I'm thinking twice about which shop to take it to because the so called specialists like you say Todd are not necessarily motorcycle specific and sounds like they could cause me a headache.

I am absolutely going through with this though so I need to make a move at some point. Somewhere on this forum someone recommended a guy who is moto inclined and does powdercoating. Not really inclined to ship though.

As far as anodizing vs powdercoating, it seems that the opinions aren't really one sided when it comes to moto parts so either is probably fine. The matte black shouldn't be too hard to match fairly closely.

Properly powder coated finish will be stronger than paint. Anodizing, IMO, is used for parts that have close tolerances...for example threaded parts. Powder-coating those would require that threads are masked off.

I can't think why there would be a specialist "motorcycle" powdercoater....as long as they understand the application and know what they are doing, they should prepare and finish the part correctly so you have no issues installing it.

bdcfe, who do you use in Chicago area?? Are you in the city or somewhere around?

Hey 370,

Did you get your bike at Downer's Grove? I'm pretty sure I sat on it before. They had 369 and 370, right? I wanted that bike but that dealer was so sketchy I couldn't bring myself to buy from them. Great bike, though.

Small world...yep. I actually wanted that 369 just for the number alone, but missed it by a day or two. Weathertech guy snatched it. The dealer was super cool in my eyes...simple transaction. Their service guy in the back is independent of the sales and is really nice guy that knows these bikes well.

I am in DG, just moved here last year from the city...had no idea there were any local MG dealers and one day just driving by on Ogden I spotted a white V7 parked out front from a corner of my eye...I turned around, and rest is history :)

We should gtg some time soon. So close...this Sunday, maybe?

Matt, I've never played with Plastidip, so can't comment on that. Seems to be a popular thing nowadays for 'easy to remove' coating.

I've had a number of things powdercoated for a couple of my Guzzis.

On my Jackal I had the following done:

HB racks (topcase and side)
Crash bars
Highway peg mounts
Handlebar clamp
Valve covers

and I'm sure I'm forgetting something

On my V7 I just had the HB racks (topcase and side) done.

In all cases I was VERY happy with the results.

Come to think of it, I've also got an HB adaptor on my Sportster that was done also

I used a local shop that is predominantly industrial but that also does some automotive and MC work, though it's the vast minority of what they do.

I found them years ago by inquiring at the local Harley dealer.

You can see the valve covers and the crash bars here:

You can just see some of the HB racks peaking out above and in front of the bags

I'm new to here and this is my first post, but I recently had a lot of things on my bike power coated. I'll post some pic's here. I myself am very happy with the powder coating, however I am in the middle of the ocean so my options are limited as we don't have any shops here that do anodizing. I like the durability of powder coating and the way it holds up.

The following items I had power coated.
Wheels
valve covers
Alternator cover
exhaust brackets
oil cooler grill
and a few other small items

changed my wheels to a new color and the plus with power coating is that it fills any little chips that you might have because the coating is pretty thick.

Only thing left to do is the pork chops... why oh why did I not just do it all the same time, you got me ! it will be easer now with the side covers and air box taken off.

Good luck with your project !!

Aloha
