Turns out I'm not a total nutjob. The vibes lessoned overall with the new tighter lid but there was still an agressive resonance from around 4000 rpm.
Checked tappets - all good, plugs/leads -all good. The bike itself was vibe free at speed (120) except the extremities like bars were amplifying the resonance and the exhaust seemed to be a possible source. I have std pipes and I'd pushed through the rear baffle plate to add some more sound to drown out the sewing machine ages ago. Checking inside I located another baffle plate deeper in - hmmm. Once those plates were removed, the resonance is much less noticeable except under load starting at 4000 rpm but otherwise it's running like a Guzzi on steriods, super smooth above 4500 rpm and sounds awesome. 4000 rpm must be the 1400s natural frequency so I'm going to try tightening everything up and see if that reduces it further - I'll keep you posted.
PS could use some more fuel lower down and I'm saving some cunning kick for Tod's flash
