I'm about 750 miles into breaking in the V100. I'm noticing that the first engine start of the day is a little sluggish. Hitting the starter isn't enough and it just stalls out unless you some add throttle and a few revs. After a few seconds it's fine an can idle by itself. Hot starts thereafter are fine. My experience with a V-Strom 650, Tiger 900 RP & Street Triple RS is that they start right up into high idle and no throttle/coaxing required, even after 3 months winter storage.
Is this normal for V100s / Guzzis?

if not used for about 2 weeks, mine is not starting. The starter revs, the battery was charged till few minutes before (fully and tried with 2 battery tenders) but the engine doesn’t start. If I connect a jump starter it fires up right away.
Start thinking something is wrong with my battery but I will ask the dealer.

No, it’s not normal and not often reported in the forum. My own experience is on V100 Stelvio, 5 months old, 6500 miles. The longest it’s been parked was 14 days. Always fired up immediately with a constant raised-revs idle.

Even new batteries can be bad, and not supply enough current to turn the motor while at the same time not supplying enough voltage to the engine control unit to properly run.

The battery needs to be tested under load. First thing I do when debugging any running problem. Buy a $75 tester and you are free and independent for life!

One other thought regarding the battery… I discovered (the hard way, over last winter), leaving the key in the ignition while sitting creates an increased parasitic drain. My Mandello, with the key in the ignition, will lose enough “juice” over just a few weeks, to not start. So, I always (1) store the key inside the house, and (2) use a tender if sitting a while.

If the battery is good, it should fire right up, and idle at around 1900rpm.😁

@BDS, I'd never, ever left the key in the ignition (and had never heard or read that that would create increased parasitic drain); it's always either inside my house or in my pants pocket (standard procedure for my other bikes, too). My Mandello's battery does get an Optimate 1 recharge every 10 days or so, and the recharge is usually finished after an overnight run (much longer than my Hypremono's and Street Triple's recharging; blaming that on V100S's dash...). Earlier, I had checked all the accessible fuses (all good) after reading another thread and letting dealer's service manager/writer know about it when making the appointment for my first service at ~3k miles (bought it, from the dealer, used).

This is something to check as I have been leaving the key in recently but not after yesterdays run so today will be a good test.

I don't take the key out of any of my bikes or cars, unless I'm parking in a strange city. But out in the country, or in our local town, or in my garage, I leave the key in, since I'd be losing the key and needing a ride fairly often. It's been my habit for 53 years and it hasn't bit me yet, so I'm way ahead.

Most of my bikes are old. The 1955 BSA doesn't even have an ignition switch. The '68 Suzuki, the '69 BSA, and the '75 Norton just have simple systems, no way to detect a key. The '07 Norge, the '09 Kawasaki, the '09 Stelvio, and the '14 Triumph have security systems and blinking red lights all the time, so they might know the key is in the switch. But I've never had a battery run down in the shop as a result.

Maybe the parasitic drain is only brand new bikes?

On several previous days I was futzing with the app/helmet/phone connection, ignition on before starting. I thought that might be draining the battery. So, today I just started her right up. It seemed better but she still needed a little coaxing from the throttle. I wasn't fully convinced. Went on my ride, got back, took the battery out and got it tested at Advanced Auto Parts. Battery is perfect.
I'll talk to the tech this week. Meanwhile, could it be a throttle issue?
