Thin film deteriorating on windscreen

Greetings! My bike is a 2014 California Touring model with the original Lexan windscreen. I am posting here because I thought other models with windscreens may have seen this, too. There is a very thin, presumably protective, film on the windscreen, that has come off in small, random places. It was that way when I bought the bike used. I have only used mild soap.and cool water to wash the windscreen. The windscreen is not as clear as I would like it to be. If I need to buy a new one, fine. But I.thought I would ask if others have seen this condition and tried extreme methods such as wet/dry sandpaper to remove the film and polishing compounds to buff out the swirls and fine scratches? I have all manner of random orbital sanders and buffers an pads handy, but do not want to make it worse. Any input is much appreciated.

Is it tint film that a previous owner added? If so, then the best way to remove it would be steam. I have removed tint film from car windows using a steam cleaner that is typically used on floors and upholstery. The warm (not really hot) steam softens the adhesive so the film can be carefully peeled off.

Hi, GerryAZ. It is not a tinted film. I think it is a factory-applied protective clear coating. Maybe my use of the word "film" was inaccurate. I wish I could send a photo but it is really hard to see. A fingernail catches the edge of it where it has worn off. Steam might be worth a try as it would not be abrasive, for sure.

It is an applied coating. Once it starts to chip, there is no way to repair it or totally remove it. Trust me, I’ve tried at least 10 different methods over the years. Never found anything that worked.

Somebody previously used a harsh chemical of some type on it. This is how the finish initially gets weakened. Windex, for example. Ammonia attacks the coating.

This is why the makers always include an instruction sheet to never apply anything to your windshield but cool, clean water.

Thank you, Scott. I will just order a new one. Now the big question is, clear or light gray smoke tinted? My bike is mostly black and, as much as I like it, sometimes that tall clear touring screen looks "meh".

If anyone in Australia is looking to change or replace a 1400 screen, I purchased a custom one from Eagle screens in Western Australia. I already have paid for the template so the cost is excellent compared to the original. Mine has been excellant since I purchased it a couple of years ago. This type does not have the problem of the laminate peeling.

This is good to know, the genuine screen is almost unobtainable these days, also the deflectors.

I have taken a few pics for you to view. The screen I ordered was light tint rather than the clear. I have the clear wind defectors, but will likely upgrade these to the light tint as well. Hope this helps

I never used anything but Plexis on mine, and it went bad. Replaced with another Guzzi screen, but this eagle screens has me interetsed, as I know this will just happen again..
