Was in the process of changing my exhaust studs to titanium ones on my V85tt , I found that the original studs where in too tight to undo using the double nut technique and didn't want to snap them off. Should I buy a proper stud extractor or just leave the standard ones in.

Titanium exhaust studs? Seriously?

Why?

What’s next? Diamonds on the soles of your shoes…

Oh well, to remove exhaust studs, you will have to seriously heat the stud and thread area on the head. No heat, no removal.

Titanium can be brittle in my decades of experience (in racing) with it, but up to you.
Per what Scott says, beyond heat, yes, a proper extractor is best.

Do they corrode as bad as the stock ones?.. Is a heat-gun enough for heat or an oxy/acetylene gently applied?

REMOVE FUEL TANK

CLEAN ALL SPILT FUEL

ALLOW FRESH AIR TO FULLY CLEAR ROOM OF ANY FUMES

I personally drape a wet, ringed out bath towel over the disconnected fuel lines, before any combustion source is introduced.

Then…

THE GOLD STANDARD IS TO MIG WELD A NUT ONTO THE OLD EXHAUST STUD. THE HEAT FROM THE WELD WILL IMMEDIATELY ALLOW THE REMOVAL OF THE STUD BY WRENCH, FROM THE HEAD.

However if this is not an option…

Just a simple handheld MAPP gas torch is sufficient and highly controllable to heat the exhaust studs

It seems obvious in your post that you Did NOT break the existing studs ?
So why risk snapping one to replace anything ?
( or are there no Nuts on the TT exhaust studs ? )

I'll get my coat.
Completely unnecessary.

I think you have confused most everybody. That is all.

We are all perplexed by your desire to change out your exhaust studs to titanium. We have never had somebody say this before. That’s all.

You have to relax and not take curiosity and confusion personality. Nobody is trying to be harsh or dismissive. We are all actually very curious.

Would you explain your thinking or how you came to this idea? Please? We really want to understand.

I for one told you 2 ways to accomplish what you wanted. Did you not see?

Don’t give up at the first pothole my friend.

That’s not a bad price at £17, incl VAT.
but I was wondering, if they are selling these out of country Eg NA we shouldn’t be paying the VAT Should we ?

Having ordered some stuff for another bike recently, they did not remove the taxes on the purchase !

Taken from Gutsibits website.

4. Do I Have To Pay VAT If I'm Not In The UK?
If you are having your order delivered to the UK or within the EU then you do have to pay VAT. If your order is being delivered outside of the EU then we will not charge you VAT however you are responsible for paying any import duties in the country the order is delivered to.

DaveN, are there any other taxes that could be applied to purchases made from the UK, but shipped out of the UK ?

When searching I could not find any references to other sneaky taxes that might be levied , but searches require the right magic words .. ;)
thanks.
Don

I've bought stuff from the UK and there were no taxes. On the Canadian side there is no tax if the value is under $200. Couriers however will charge exorbitant amounts for brokerage fees etc. in some cases.

I have bought the same studs in the hope of changing them to reduce the corrosion of the OEM’s. I may wait til they get worse because I thought it may be an easy job to change them. I have a MIG welder though. Glad I found this thread. Stuff I ordered from Gutsibits were VAT free cos Im in Australia

Thank you! Now I understand why you would want titanium exhaust studs.

Never thought about that! Cool.

Welcome to GuzziTech! Please do not get discouraged and bolt.

Stand your ground and make them respect you! 😆😀👍👌

So you should be able to loosen up your stock ones with heat like I said.

I would use some medium Loctite thread locker on the titanium ones on the side that goes into the head. That way, they will not spin out on you when you undo the nut at a later date.
