Curious... Can you tell me why you would think that smaller shorter mufflers would not be as loud? Because they are.
Sound/This is something I fight with often online.
 
I'm probably in the minority on this, but I like the appearance of the stock mufflers on my III Special. That's not to say that I won't change them out for something that brings out the Guzzi twin sound a bit more, but I would prefer that they are similar sized slip-ons, not shorties.

Oh, I don't think I said this at all, in any case didn't mean to. I think generally shorter is louder, but of course there are many factors in loudness I take it (material, design, baffles or not, etc).

Aesthetically I like shorter a bit better, and less metal means lighter (usually), and as far as loudness goes I am a goldilocks -- not too soft not too hard...
 
BTW, here are the Baak pipes I mentioned above. Pretty cool I think, though maybe even a bit too short (looks-wise).

Similar experience here. My solution is to soon replace big fat rubber pegs with slender metal ones. Also my kevlar riding jeans have big flappy ankles--got some new jeans. Been out of town 3 of 4 past weeks. Finally Houston area roads open after hurricane. So, I plan a long fast ride on the new blue Special Thursday. About time for first service. Have rear rack ordered--will install when arrives and have dealer do the first service.
