How many miles do you usually go before the fuel light comes on? And how many miles have you ridden with the light on and counter running?
Just looking to see what is up with my bike. The light comes on at around 125 miles. I haven't had to ride it more than 15 miles or so before filling up again so don't have any real idea how far the reserve is good for. Just seems that the light is coming on to soon but who knows. Manual says that the tank capacity is 3.9 USG but filling on the side stand I have never been able to put much more than 2.5 gallons in. I am sure that if the bike was filled up sitting up right you could get a bit more in. Or I could just not using all that is available in the reserve mode. Anyway some input would be interesting.
 
It's easily. When you fill up you still have just over half as much still in the tank. Then you could assume that you're good for another 66-70 miles. But temperature and elevation will play havoc with this calculation. Carry a small fuel container (full of course) until you can work out your situation.
 
Easy peasy!

1. Fill your tank right up.
2. Fill a 5 litre fuel can.
3. Strap the spare 5 litres to your pillion seat.
4. Ride until the fuel light comes on - note the mileage.
5. Continue riding until you run out of fuel - note the mileage.
6. Pour the spare 5 litres into your tank.
7. Ride to the nearest servo, fill up, and ...
8. Repeat from step 1.

I did it 3 times to attain a reasonable average. Haven't run out of fuel since.

Turn off the engine asap after the fuel runs out so as not to run the fuel pump dry for too long. I've been assured by a FI specialist that the fuel pump will endure the odd fuel outage with no ill effect. No special bleeding of the system is required after running the fuel out. You'll hear the fuel pump come up to pressure in just a couple of seconds after turning the ignition switch on.

Posted this a few other places and got some more feed back. Several of the responces were from others who had done to same type test that Dinsdale Piranha suggested. Over all it seems that everyones light comes on at aprox. 125 miles as mine does. So it is on when about 2.2 to 2.4 gallons have been used out of 3.9 gallons total. After that the reserve will get you around 43 miles or so. Of course how you have been riding can make this all vary. For my part I am going to just look at it that once the light comes on I have 40 miles to find a station to fill up. Total tank range looks to be around 170 miles but depending on how you ride and how the bike is loaded down or not could vary this. I think the 40 mile reserve should be a good rule of thumb for me.
 
It might have been easier if you had stated what model you are riding. I'm guessing from your avatar a v9.
I didn't specify as the capacity of both the Romer and Bobber are the same. I checked to be sure with the shop manual to see for sure. And just used V9 in the thread title.
 
I fill up siting on the bike and get between 135 and 140 miles before the light comes on so usable tank range is easily 170 miles

1. Fill tank until full. Visually confirm level.

2. Go ride. At some point (~40-60 miles) it doesn’t matter, stop at a fuel station. Fill tank again. Note volume of fuel pumped into tank.

3. Divide your ridden miles by the volume of gas you just added, in order to compute mpg figure. i.e. 65 miles / 1.22 gallons = 53.278 miles / gallon.

4. Get your owners manual and look up the reserve fuel quantity. If the manual says 3.9 gallons with a 1 gallon reserve, then compute your expected low fuel light “turn on time”. i.e. 3.9 gallon capacity - 1.0 gallon reserve = 2.9 gallons before low fuel light x your computed mpg from #3 above (I.e. 52.278 ) = 154 miles before expected low fuel light. (THESE ARE ALL MAKE BELIEVE NUMBERS USED FOR REFERENCE ILLUSTRATION ONLY).

5. Now, you should know within reason (+\- 10%) the range you have before reserve and the mileage you can reasonably expect to drive on reserve.

It is never a good idea to intentionally run your fuel tank until dry. Besides, it’s not necessary in order to solve this equation.
