Valve clearance question

My '98 EV now has about 111,000 miles showing, so it's had a little wear on it. I have always adjusted valves every 3000 miles using .004 and .006 inches of clearance for the intake and exhaust, respectively. Normally, I would have slight adjustments each time but nothing major. Now, both of my exhaust valves are super tight when it's time to adjust. The intake valves are still as they were, that is, sometimes a little bit of adjustment is needed. For about the last four or five adjustments, the exhaust clearance is so tight I can't even fit a gage into the gap.

The intakes always have to be tightened up while the exhausts now always have to be loosened.

What could this be a sign of? Worn out valves seats? Something else?

Muley,

Classic example of valve seat recession. Probably will need the exhaust seats and and maybe the exhaust valves replaced.

it is finally getting broke in!

seriously though you might try 8 or 10 thousandths for three thousand miles and see what it is the next time.

Could be the seats, could be the valves (tuliping). I would try the world spec clearances first, but if it is valves or valve seats you might as well fix it sooner rather then later. Luckily it is not that big a deal on a Guzzi, and you can take advantage of the opportunity and have the ports done. The stock job is pretty so-so. Think of the power you could have!!!!!

Power :silly:

What's that ?

Seriously, the bike has lost significant power especially noticeable in 5th trying to maintain freeway speeds. Also noticeable on take off. Fuel economy is down at least 15% from what it was when I bought it. However, the biggest difference is trying to have fun in the twisties. I must stay in 2nd gear just to have enough power to come out of serious curves whereas 3rd was fine before. I am not a big fan of gearing down while in the middle of a tight spot:huh:

It's almost as though I need a new set of gears located exactly between the existing ones with a low first thrown in for good measure.

OK, is this a job that is do-it-yourself with zero experience on valves and only average mechanical apptitude (other than the porting which is beyond my abilities for sure). ?
