So I am checking out a G5 with supposedly 10 miles on it. I wanna lube up the cam followers and rod ends before I turn this over for the 1st time in 30 years (in theory).

While attempting to get the cylinder back over the piston I came across something I havn't seen before. A warped oil ring! It sticks in the piston groove at one point ... and does so installed upside down and in other pistons.

The green in the photo is a sheet of glass. The brown specs are sawdust. I took this pic in an area I use for wood work...

I am glad that I discovered this before I fired up the engine. I wonder what caused this?

Hey Alex
What are the hair line ..... metal threads?
Did it come out of the bore or is it part of the ring?

I dunno. Possibly threads or chaf from the rags and paper towels I used to clean the ring.

I will check the other side tomorrow. The rings I am installing use a different style oil ring and I wanna try to keep this thing somewhat balanced ...

Interesting stuff though. I didn't see those "hairs" untill I cleaned up the photo for posting. Maybe Photoshop CS5 residue? ;)

Alex,

Depending on the spec of the ring ........
Just keep in mind the flatness of the glass. ;)

When I used to certify thickness gauges on the bench .... a granite table was used. (Precision .00005" Flatness)
(Ya,Ya, temperature, humidity and air particle had to be controled also) .......... I guess overkill for oil rings.

If I was to guess as to why then I can quickly come up with 3.

1. Manufacturing fault.
2. Ring gap not quite big enough.
3. Ring distorted when barrel lowered over it on assembly.

Just a few guesses.
