Hello,
I am planning to purchase a V7 at the end of the year. My question is would you buy a stock V7 racer or a black V7 Stone and upgrade the exhaust and shocks? I like the looks of both of them and with the upgrades the price would be comparable. I currently have a 1981 Yamaha xj650 which I like but it's time for something new.
thanks, brplacid

The stock exhaust system is the same on both, the Racer just has upswept pipes. Aftermarket mufflers for either would set you back the same amount. (See my ad for V7 Mistrals in the classified section.)

The Racer also has clip-on bars and rearset pegs, which may or may not fit you better, better shocks, a solo seat and some added bling.

Sit on them both and buy the one that feels and looks the best to you. I think you'd find that buying one and trying to turn it into the other would be a hassle, a delay in getting what you want, and more expensive than you think.

I have a Racer and don't think much of the upgraded shocks. I bought the bike because of the color scheme. The red frame is killer and looks really good in person. That's something you can't upgrade.

Thanks for the input. I wouldn't really be trying to turn the Stone into the Racer, I just have read that the suspension needed improvement and changing the exhaust would improve performance. A side question on that though, I have heard conflicting info on if changing the exhaust would improve mpg, any thoughts? I'm not really into bling but I do like the cafe look. I'm 6'2 so I don't know if that would play into it or not. I think my xj650 would be similar to the Stone as far as how I sit. I have sat on a classic, but no one in the dfw area has the racer or Stone.

I am 6'2" as well. I guess I fit OK. I've been riding small bikes for some time. I don't mind. I was a little concerned about the clip-ons on the Racer, but found them to feel quite natural when riding. I don't get cramped with the rearsets or anything. Oh, and I'm old (59). If anyone is going to get cramped, it's me.

The Classic, Stone and Special should all have the same riding position.

If you open up the exhaust, you should get better gas mileage. However, the bike already runs quite lean stock. If you open up the exhaust, you get more air flow, and it will be leaner still. You should really richen up the mixture (see Todd).

The sound and performance of the small block Guzzi is quite additive. A nicer sounding exhaust will only deepen the addiction. Good luck NOT riding it with a fist full of throttle. And there goes the MPG....
