'06 Breva 1100 Starting problems

No, plenty of room. Also use a 13mm socket to remove the battery cable from the starter. Beginning to sound like a failed starter motor. Takes me about 5 minutes or less to remove a starter from a big block.
Do the gears on the starter have to be lined up with the flywheel gears?

The solenoid pushes the bendix into the ring gear, once they are fully meshed, a heavy duty contact makes "contact" and connects positive from the battery directly to the starter motor, these fittings can be seen on the rear of the starter motor, its called a pre engaged starter, the thin black wire on the rear of the solenoid gets its power from the start relay where you say you have done the "mod"
As it happens this last week my Breva just clicked, getting a new battery tomorrow, they don't last long these days, 2 years

I had to replace the starter on my 2006 1100 Breva in 2020. Valeo starters aren't the best. I did replace with an excellent starter but unfortunately it is no longer in production. Good thing I purchased it about 10 years ago.

The "new" battery I first installed was defective; it would start once after being on the trickle charger, and then just a click after that. I have returned it, and have since installed another "new" battery from another source which now works like a charm. Interestingly I took the first "new" battery into an auto parts store for a test which showed that it was "good", which obviously was not the case. Their testing protocols must be lacking something.

I have seen this too. Honestly, it depends upon their equipment and if the person using it has been trained.

A modern digital load tester will put a significant load on the battery and test the drop in voltage and its ability to be sustained for several seconds. It will also measure the internal resistance between the plates which absolutely indicates battery condition.

Some shops use an older system which only measures surface voltage which can give you the errors and starting issues you experienced.

I have also gotten a new starter motor assembly bought in case the battery was not at fault; now it's a spare. Thanks for all you guys' help and guidance on this. I am excited about being in this group's discussions.

I've seen this dozens of times now. When the battery isn't a "factory prepped" and has to be filled and charged, they are most often improperly put into service, meaning charged immediately after filling (or it could be a bad battery of course). Glad you got it resolved.

Another upside for lithium;
