Oh No - Not Tires

It would be interesting to read your report on the use of this tire.

I said "ribcage" because that is the part that would hurt most if I tried to ride on the tire pictured; AFTER I crashed because it is totally bald and worn out .....

When I picked up my 2010 Cali 1400, the seller had shod the bike with new Shinko tires. Altho I haven't read thru all 29 pages of this thread, I'm wondering if anyone has had any relationship, good or bad, with this brand. I'll put about 1500 miles on these tires this summer with a road trip in Colorado: 2-up and luggage.

Which Shinko tires? 777, 999, etc?

I have the Shinko 777 on mine and really like them. Friends of mine on various other baggers run them and have only had good things to say about them performance and longevity wise. The only other thing I was told came from guys riding the MUCH heavier Harley's and they recommend the 999 as they are a stiffer tire and lasted longer than the 777's did.

The front tire is labeled 5-E 890 Journey. I would have to remove a side case to see if the rear is labeled the same or different. It's just good to hear that the brand is being used on heavy cruisers. Thanks for the quick reply.

Any thoughts on installing a Dunlop D423 on the rear of my Audace? The size is 200/55R16 compared to the original size of 200/60R16.
I've been running Shinko 777's for the last 40k miles front and rear (180/65/16) and really like the improved handling as well as long tread life. I found a fellow who just sold his Goldwing and did not install this new tire so I can get it for $100 along with a new Exedra Max 130/70ZR18M/C for another $60. Now I have no issues with spending money on tires, and would never compromise safety for $$ but looking at the specs there is a minimal difference in size and these are standard issue on new Goldwing's so they are designed for a heavy bike. Just looking for thoughts or similar experiences with this tire. I go through 2 sets of tires every 18 months, about 15k miles a year. Thanks!

You will be going backwards in the handling from what you "really like" about the narrower tire, as well as reducing the sidewall height which will slow the steering. So I would say two steps back...

In many cases the purpose of a forum is to share experiences and information. I was simply trying to decide if saving $100 on a tire was worth sacrificing performance and if anyone had actually run a tire this size before. No need for you to comment if your opinion is not something beneficial to the post.

How is a poster supposed to know if someone else on the list doesn't consider their opinion "beneficial to the post"?

I just skimmed back and dont see any un-beneficial posts relative to tire size, handling, tire wear, etc.

So don't ask for our thoughts if you don't want them....... as has been said here many times, there are numerous members who are active or retired professionals in the motorcycle industry. My response addressed your specific question,

I related what the results will be from the size change. Your response tells me two things: You seek validation for going the "cheap" route; and you have a tough time when you don't get the expected validation. Good Luck

I appreciated your reply to my post, it made me think twice about whether it would be worth saving a few $ for a sacrifice in handling, and my decision was made as a result. Thank you
