V7 II ENGINE FAILURES & CLUTCH ADJUST NOTICE!

I own a V85TT and it's the only Guzzi I've ever owned. It has maybe the best clutch I've ever used.
As an FYI to this thread to lessen any further confusion/frustration, the newer V7 Mk III & IV (850) along with the V85TT has a much improved clutch actuation. Do not compare it to the older Gen I V7s. The Mk II had a slightly improved pull when they went to the 6-spd as well. All still require daily adjustment, including the V85TT in my experience in using them as rentals.

this was a riveting read... great thread....👍
Drama, mystery, love, betrayal and the occasional dead engine LOL

Thanks guys, as a new member , I have seen some threads here about the crankshaft thrust washer omitted from Some V7. Last summer I decided to buy a V7 Nevada Classic Anniversario 2014 model. 6500 on the clock/stunning condition. It's a gorgeous little bike. I fancied another Guzzi after previously been the owner of a Bellagio and earlier a T5 with which I toured across Europe without a hitch..My issue is this..I bought the V7 as above and rode the bike back through the Midlands and pennines to Glasgow. I enjoyed the ride home very much and the bike ran perfectly if a little harsh on the rear suspension. Winter descended and the bike had a wooly put on and garaged. Last week I fired the bike up, purring perfectly...pulled clutch engaged 1st released clutch and nothing,I could rev whilst in gear. feels like the clutch is not disengaging. The bike felt perfect. The last time I had it out on the road, which was one midwinter ride. I read here on the forum about clutch issues with some models. If there is any chance that there is a (thrust washer or crank issue)I am nervous to have the clutch changed/repaired if there is a risk that a catastrophic crank issue exists in the motor..sorry! I tried to load a picture of my bike ...hit the wrong "file". It's a bike file I can delete again. Anyway I am sorry for the laborious speel ...my VIN number is..ZGULMH009AM111279. I would be eternally grateful if you guys could shed any light as to whether my bike is a candidate for missing crank part. I am a bit depressed at the thought I may have fallen into a mechanical trap. Many thanks and so grateful to have some support. Graham.

My wife owns a 2016 V7II Special with 18k miles on it. The clutch has always been problematic. Yesterday I loosened the lock nut at the rear of the transmission and set the slightest free play at the rear lever. We just went for a ride and the cable is taught again. I just saw the entry where Todd said that happens once the motor is hot. I will adjust it again tomorrow with about twice the slack I set yesterday and see if that works once it is ridden. For those of us that are loyal to the brand I wish someone would give a detailed instruction on how to do this right the first time. We now live more that 500 miles from a dealer so I would like to do this myself. I have a 2020 V85TT with almost 32k on it and the clutch hasn't needed adjusting.

Mine just sits around now. I'm resigned to having to pull the clutch apart now.

The situation now after doing all I've done, 2mm doesn't work for me after many attempts and precise measurements for anyone quick to judge. Ive even tried giving more allowance when cold to compensate for when it gets hot, but when I do that it won't go in gear (even though minimal). Then when I do at the correct measurements, the engine heats up quickly and and falls out of adjustment too quickly and needs readjustment at the lever end to limp home.

Tbh, didn't think it would happen but this bike is putting me off motorbikes

Thanks Vagrant, appreciate the suggestion.

I've actually been through every potential issue raised in these and other forums and had no luck with the above. I continue to keep an eye out for any new suggested reasons for the issue but seems to me it must be in the clutch plates given everything else Ive tried in the below hasn't worked and no alternative things to try have since been mentioned.

It is worth changing out the cable for a new one. Make sure it’s nowhere near the cylinder. Lube all pivot points.
Vagrant thank you for the input. I'm pretty OCD about my bikes and keep the pivots lubed and would lube the cable if it needed it. The "modern" cables are so much better than the Triumphs I started out riding in the 70's. I've removed all the slack at the clutch lever on the handlebar, so I have 100% of adjustment if I needed it there. Someone mentioned that the free play at the adjuster behind the transmission is 2mm. I think I was pretty close to that when I adjusted it yesterday. Todd stated that things will tighten up once the engine is hot and that's what happened yesterday. She had to keep the front brake on to keep the bike from moving with the clutch pulled in at a stop light. Will you give me the reasoning for changing the cable? Inquiring mind wants to know.

JC3, many here are owner/riders, not mechanics that work on Guzzis daily.
That said, things like this are nearly impossible to diagnose via the net. It is very common to have to adjust the cable slack on a ride frequently on the V7/9 small blocks. They have gotten continually better over the years since the V7 II 6-spd, though again, they ALL needed adjusted frequently. Once the bearing is smoked, you'll chase that all day long with adjustment. All I can be of help with on it here.

From 07 on all the smallblocks that I set up new here in ATL had to be adjusted and adjuster was loose on bars early on. Breva's & early Classics, Nevada's. It was like cables were too long and you only had 1 adjustment. I had to tighten up the arms cause it would not engage and go into gear. V7II was better.
