Hi all, thought I would post my findings with this problem recently for your reference in case you come across this issue. I have read this similar problem before on this forum but did not find a conclusive answer from the threads. I have a 2012 8V sport. Had it since new and just ticked over 45000Km's. Recently I started to notice that when the oil was very hot and stopped at traffic lights, low oil pressure light would intermittently come on after a say 10 seconds of idling? I asked around and nobody had the perfect answer locally and there was some discussion on the guzzitech forum but nothing conclusive. So I took the oil pressure switch off and tested with a hand calibrator and it was switching at its designed setpoint of approx. 3.5PSI or there abouts? So I went a little further hoping I might find something in the bottom end rather than conceding it must be the pump? I took the oil pan off and the oil pick ups, then the flange holding the oil relief valve and oil radiator thermostatic valve. What I found was that the second gasket on the top of the flange that mates with the bottom of the crankcase had partially failed around the main oil gantry to the top of the engine and was bleeding oil back into the sump through the failed flange. So at low RPM with hot oil, the pressure was very low at the top of the engine and the oil pressure warning light would come on and then a couple of seconds later the Aladins lamp would come on the digtal dash.
So I replaced the flange gasket and the pan gasket and torqued up to spec (lucky Tom Newell had both in stock! Thanks Tom....) , replaced the filter and refilled with oil..... presto, back up to normal oil pressure at the top of the engine at idle and no more low pressure oil light!

Cost me $25.00 for a couple of gaskets from Tom (and a whole weekend performing a lobotomy)

Anyway enjoy! Glad I nailed it.

Cheers Paul.

Very impressive, Paul.

That said, a bit annoying, too, as I usually operate on the "look for the most arcane, unlikely, and complex cause" system.

Appreciate the detailed description and pix.

Thanks.

Bill

P.S. I recently had a similar "oil can" and red light come on a very hot day, in traffic, and after a spirited run on my Norge. I am convinced -- not to be confused with "correct" or as a start of an oil thread! ;) -- that my use of "lesser oil" was the cause. See https://www.guzzitech.com/forums/threads/on-the-verge.16493/#post-123331

Thanks Bill, further to my post; I rode the bike last Sunday for a good 2 hours at high speed and when I came down from the hills and back into suburbia and stopped at a few lights for 2 minutes or more at idle, no more problems with low oil pressure! Definitely the top gasket between the bottom of the crank case and the flange which holds the Oil pressure relief valve and the oil thermostatic valve. I think it might pay to periodically check the torque of the 14 bolts around the oil pan for 10Nm torque as per spec and also particularly the 4 bolts which press the flange gasket to the crankcase! As I doubt mine were torqued up to factory spec when my gasket let go. Must be a combination of vibration and temperature cycling perhaps that's loosens them up a little and this can allow a piece of the gasket to blow back into the sump. I notice on the earlier 2 valve engines the 3 oil gantry ports in question shown in my photo were smaller in diameter on the older engines. Guzzi in their wisdom must have decided to upsize these gantries to improve oil pressure at low RPM I'm guessing and perhaps now the metal face and the amount of gasket material around these 3 holes is a little less. If any of the bolts loosen a bit I would guess this may allow for a blow out especially here in Brisbane where the bike can run really hot when you have a spirited ride in the middle of summer!

Cheers Paul.

Thanks for this post, age notwithstanding! My 2014 Norge just started doing the exact same thing and I was scratching my head trying to figure out why. With full oil and no leaks it made no sense for the light to come on in idle. Thanks

This seems to be quite common. My 2012 is doing it also. I've had the gaskets to do the job for a long while but just can't bring myself to do the job during prime riding season.

They make better pan gaskets than the original black ones, usually a green color. Make sure hole size for pressure is large enough(later block).

Where’s the best place to order the gaskets and exactly what should I be looking for? Thanks

Sorry no MG dealer in Pittsburgh market. Do u have a good source? I didn’t see them available on this site

You could always get one from MG Cycle, or the other online places if you don't want to drive

Seriously?

Ever heard of GOOGLE or the Moto Guzzi corporate website which lists dealers?

Took literally 2 seconds effort to locate Monaco Cycle Sales in Franklin (~ 85 miles from Pittsburg) and Motoplex West Chester.

So maybe it’s not a Guzzi dealer in your immediate backyard but certainly within a little drive from where you are.

That’s how most of us have a dealer located “near” us. Mine is located 165 miles away from me.

I had forgotten about Monaco's. I stopped in there years ago but haven't been back. In fact, having heard no chatter about it, thought it had folded. The website seems dead and FB page is dated, but I'll stop in and kick tires there soon. I ride through or near Franklin on our monthly eldercare missions to Erie; just back, so it'll have to be August.

As long as I'm here, I have to say that Pennsylvania roads, IMO, are ever bit as fine -- in challenges and condition -- as those here in Virginia and West Virginia where I do most of my "local" riding.

Even better, I rarely (as in almost never) see LEO's on any but the 'Pike, Eyes, or numbered U.S. highways. :giggle:

The Appalachian spine runs north from SW to the NE, so my moto trips to Erie and back are a rocking & rolling delight as, whichever among the many roads I can take, I am "required" to cross several significant ridge lines in my SE to NW runs. Simply grand.

Monaco is no longer a MG dealer. We did have Kissel Motorsport near Altoona Pa just become an MG dealer. About 90 miles away, but I want to support our dealer network so they’re going to fix this issue and do my 18,500 mile service for me. All’s well that ends well I guess.

I've stopped by there -- Kissell's -- twice recently since they took on MG.

Nice folks, and experienced wrenches generally, especially, I understand, with beemers, but very new to Guzzis.

Unless your appointment is day after tomorrow, you may wish to get smart on any non-OEM bits you may want them to install so you have time to order those.

You might also plan on an overnight trip or drop-off.

As I said, above, GREAT roads between you and Tyrone. Your Norge will love 'em; you'll probably scream in your helmet a few times. :giggle:

Heck, after yours is fixed -- or before -- consider a trip to the Moto Grappa.

Megan from their service department seems nice. They scheduled my appointment about 2 weeks out so they could order the parts. I copied and pasted and emailed the "hot oil" issue right from the forums and she said they could take care of that. She said they have loaner bikes for service so that's a huge plus since I'm staying at a local hotel overnight. I'll let you all know how it goes when they've finished.

10 hours labor @$60 per hour later the issue was fixed at Kissell’s. They were very nice and gave me a nice new BMW loaner bike for the day. HOWEVER, After riding 150 miles straight home I realized the fuckers left my side stand loose! I’ve got about 1” of play that wasn’t there before they tore into it.. Now I’m sure I’ll end up fighting them about paying or reimbursement to a LOCAL shop that can fix that.

The hours for this repair are excessive but their labor rate if it is $60, is ridiculously cheap. Who knows...
