Pop goes the Mandello

I would definitely be having words to the valve spring supplier if I was Piaggio. It's not like this is a screaming four cylinder. Why did it fail?
No idea at this stage. The engine is going back to the factory for inspection but I would be very surprised if an answer will be forthcoming to the actual end user! I would imagine it will come under the 'one of those things' headings

Seriously? All mechanical systems have a failure rate. All of them. There is no such thing as 100% perfect flawless metallurgy.
Yeah you're right but surely it would be standard practice to double check their whole stock doesn't have a defect?

No, Mandello del Lario, Italy.

Of globally sourced components.
I would be curious of how much is still actually made in Mandello del Lario. I imagine since Piaggio took over there would be a lot of pressure to have more done at the Piaggio factory. Like everything these days I'm guessing a lot of the electronic components are made in China bit surprisingly I have noted looking at my V7 850 that a lot of the plastics still say "made in Italy"

Ok, third first service now complete! All ok with the new engine and I'm now able to ride properly.

One thing picked up was that there is an unreasonable amount of free play in one of the front brake discs (left side). The shop have put in a warranty claim and I said to swap them out when I go in for the next service. That's due in a couple of thousand miles so won't be long!

I'm on my second engine. First engine was ticking at idle and coming from a Cali 1400 I did not really notice till a few weeks had passed. I took the bike in and they replace the hydraulic tensioners with no affect. Bike was only loud at idle and when cold, at about 140 F it quieted down and in all other respects was fine. In the meantime, I had a bad crash on the Cali and was out of the riding business for about eight months so there was no time pressure on the replacement which took about two months. Got the bike back changed the oil and filter after 600 miles and it's been great since. The dealer was helpful and responsive, so I have no issues there. I did expect to hear something about the findings but have not checked. I was in Deal's Gap last week and the MG experience group came by, and I asked the factory rep. He stated that they may send the engines back to Italy but they probable just can them - not real reassuring. Anyway, I'll go back to the dealer for the 6000 mile service and I'll post if there is any update. It could take a while since I've been riding my K1600GT on the long trips.

Same here. Getting two new discs + pads under warranty.
